The Duke was designed as a 47 apartment-style condominium located in Mission Calgary, directly off of 17th Avenue. The building includes 1 and 2-bedroom apartments, 3 bedroom walk-ups and four townhomes integrated into a unique U-shaped building. This configuration was intentionally developed to appeal to an inner-city demographic seeking more diverse layouts, access to outdoor space, and a stronger sense of individuality within a multi-residential setting. By offering a wide range of unit types and sizes, the Duke responds to varying household needs while promoting long-term urban living.
The U-shaped form creates a shared internal courtyard that fosters social interaction and a sense of community among residents, while also allowing increased daylight, ventilation, and visual connectivity throughout the building. Through thoughtful planning, efficient wood-frame construction, and carefully considered detailing, the project establishes a strong balance between affordability and architectural character.
Situated on 18th Avenue SW and directly across from St. Mary’s High School, the Duke provides a sensitive yet confident urban response within a well-established residential context. Recognized by the City of Calgary as a successful model, the project is frequently referenced as a precedent for enhancing quality of life through innovative, cost-conscious residential design.
